Though a lifelong Republican, Eisenhower betrayed the Republican Party and conservatism in his Farewell Address, in which he attacked the role of industry in determining the military direction of the United States. For this reason, he has been called a "crypto-[[socialist]]" by many of today's top conservative figures.
