In 1801, [[President Thomas Jefferson|Thomas Jefferson]] sends the ''Constitution'' to be the flagship of the Mediterranean Squadron whose mission is to protect US merchant ships from renewed aggression of the Barbery Pirates, who were demanding tribute in exchange for access to Mediterranean ports.

The USS ''Constitution'' is now berthed at Pier 1 of the former Charlston Navy Yard at one end of Boston's Freedom Trail, as is open to the public year-round. She is still a commissioned Navy ship, however, and visitors are subject to Navy provisions and the fact that she puts out to sea occasionally.
