== Purpose ==
Diacritical marks are used in many languages other than English to indicate variations in pronounciation. A good example of such marks are accent marks over vowels in French words, or umlauts in Germanic languages. While it is Conservapedia's policy to require American English spelling in articles, it is recognized that personal names and place names may contain such marks and that editors may wish to use them for the sake of accuracy. This article is offered as guidance in how to create such marks for use where desired in articles about people and places outside the United States.

If an author wishes to use such marks but is unsure how to create them, the following procedure is suggested:
* Enclose the letter and desired diacritical mark, in that order, between a pair of exclamation marks, to indicate which letter and mark are supposed to be together
* Use the substitutions listed below to indicate which mark is required:
