Justice [[William Brennan]] delivered the opinion of the court, joined by Justices [[Thurgood Marshall]], [[Harry Blackmun]], [[Lewis Powell]], and [[John Paul Stevens]].  Justice Powell filed a concurring opinion.  Justices [[Warren Burger]], [[Byron White]], [[William Rehnquist]], and [[Sandra Day O'Connor]] (joined in part by Justice Rehnquist) filed dissenting opinions.
