::Yes, "serving" as a professor is the same as being a professor. (In fact, one definition of professor is "one who lectures in their field of study." This is the most pathetic use of weasel-words I have ever seen to defend the indefensible. Everyone makes a mistake- but it takes a special kind of stubborn to try and change the definition. He was paid, he was employed, he was a professor as per his employer's criteria. This is just not an honest criticism, it's weird and I just don't understand the motivation? It's time for the whining to stop and this silliness to be put to bed before we all look like fools.
I have been following the US elections very closely, through BBC, FOX, CNN etc and websites and the only place I have heard Obama's professorship is here! I think the point to peoples debate is that the want the sentence removed from the article all together, not an insistence that the article state he is a professor. Its not even relevant to his presidential campagin!
