In my experience, teachers have been all too eager to apply phonics. My experience may not be completely endemic, but unless my experience differs with the vast majority of public-school-educated children in this country, I do think that it is enough to state with some degree of certainty that phonics is alive and well, and any combat between phonics and alternate methods is simply an academic debate between two alternate schools of thought. :::::It would seem that it ''is'' - the proponents of psycholinguistics cited here, the article page and the phonics page, all include the gobsmacking objection that advocates of phonics are advocates of conservatism/the Christian right.
