Despite this howeve, Darwin was known to reach out to God privately during times of crisis. When trying to kick a cocaine habit he said to a friend "If God would be an animal he would be a Monkey Eagle, because only he can help me get this monkey off my back."
There exists in hostile Darwin literature a story about a Christian called Lady Hope who visited and spoke with a dying Charles Darwin.
