He was Prime Minister of the so-called Democratic Republic of Vietnam (actually a totalitarian [[Communist]] state) from 1945 to 1955. He assumed the office of President in 1955 and remained there until his death on September 2, 1969.  After the civil war ended in 1975, [[Saigon]] was renamed [[Ho Chi Minh City]].
