Modern criticism of the Tarzan books has noted the casual racism which runs rampant throughout the book, and have pointed to parallels with ''The Leatherstocking Tales'' by James Fenimore Cooper.  Both Tarzan and Natty Bumppo, the hero of Cooper's series, are Caucasians who are raised by "savage" peoples and who prove superior by virtue of their race.  This was in keeping with the contemporary thought about race and capability, but runs contrary to much of what is thought in the modern era.
