The civil war was going poorly for the south, but the north still had more battles to fight before it claimed victory. Several people were opposed to continuing the war and some thought it should be seen through to the end. The Democrats, who greatly opposed the war, nominated former General [[George B. McClellan]] as their candidate. The republicans nominated President [[Lincoln]] as their candidate. The election results showed:
