The media has a tendency to use the term in a trivializing way, drawing connections that mock the true meaning, much as 'true love' is used to describe couples who keep splitting up and getting back together. As an example Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie were described as BFFs, even after Paris had let it be known she wanted nothing to do with Nicole, merely because they were seen in the same room together.
