reply re: Depression
Line 1: Line 1:
Hi Andy. You mention in your lecture "Then, in 1929, the stock market suddenly crashed. The era of prosperity was over. The Great Depression had begun. Historians blame this partly on speculators driving up the stock market, but actually no one really knows what the cause of the Depression was." Could you expand on how this suddenly came about? I was taught that a lot of liberal lending practices were to blame for this, but that doesn't seem to be your conclusion. Rather, if I'm reading this correctly, you make it look as though the conservatives in office couldn't forsee problems in the lending industry. I'm not trying to be too critical, but I think it could help students to understand how important conservative principles in lending can be. Thanks! : You raise a good point.  Thank you.  I was not aware of liberal lending practices causing the [[Great Depression]], but it seems possible.  Note, however, that then-President [[Herbert Hoover]] was not a [[conservative]].--[[User:Aschlafly|Aschlafly]] 13:53, 8 June 2008 (EDT)
