'''Hans Hube''' (1890-1944) served in the [[German]] Army in [[World War I]] and [[World War II]]. In World War I, as a junior officer, he was wounded and had his left arm amputated.
Early in [[World War II]], he was promoted to the rank of [[General]]. In 1942, he commanded a [[Panzer]] Corps at the [[Battle of Stalingrad]]. In November 1942, [[Soviet]] forces surrounded the Germans. In January 1943, Hube was airlifted out of Stalingrad. His entire Panzer Corps was killed or captured by the Soviet. In the summer of 1943 he commanded German forces in [[Sicily]].
In October 1943 he took command of the First Panzer Army, which had 200,000 men. In February 1944, his forces assisted German soldiers escaping from the [[Cherkassy-Korsun Pocket]]. In late March 1944, the entire First Panzer Army was surrounded by [[Soviet]] forces led by Marshals [[Georgi Zhukov]] and [[Ivan Konev]]. The Panzer Army had to retreat in very difficult conditions. On April 15 1944, they broke through the Soviet lines but had to abandon most of their [[tank]]s, supplies and heavy equipment. On 21 April 1944, Hube was killed in a plane crash.
