:Jessica, I think the term you're looking for to describe Hiragana/Katakana is a "syllabary."  That was my understanding when I took Nihongo in high school.  Regardless, this is an extremely well written article!  Arigatoo gozaimasu!  --[[User:LautRN|Jeffrey W.
