:Philip, many biblical scholars believe that the Bible is filled with figurative language, instead of literal language. For instance, in John 6:32-35 Jesus explains that the true bread from heaven is not actual bread/manna. It is Jesus himself who satisfies our spiritual hunger with his teachings. This is made very explicit in Matthew 16:6-12, where Jesus warns against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees. After the disciples mistakenly believe he is talking about bread, he corrects them, after which they understand he was talking about false teachings.
