In July 2008, McCain submitted an editorial to the ''[[New York Times]]'', responding to an Obama editorial it had printed. The Times rejected it; see [[McCain Editorial]]. Ironically, McCain is the candidate they endorsed. In their defense, Times op-ed editor David Shipley "...because it did not offer new information." Plus, they made the point that they have been publishing McCain's Op-Ed articles since 1996. The Times did not state whether his previous submissions had been rejected before being accepted and published. McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds responds "John McCain believes that victory in [[Iraq]] must be based on conditions on the ground, not arbitrary timetables. Unlike [[Barack Obama]], that position will not change based on politics or the demands of the New York Times,” <ref>[http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/07/21/mccain-campaign-says-new-york-times-blocked-op-ed-response-to-obama/ New York Times Blocked Op-Ed Response to Obama] Fox News July 21, 2008</ref>
