The IMDB website rating for the film as at July 2008 was 3.7 out of 10.  However the vast majority of votes were either 1 or 10, indicating that the film had a polarising effect on the audience due to its content.  Removing both the 1 and 10 ratings results in an overall rating of 6.25.

Because of the blackballing of the film by people who had never seen it, it is sometimes hard to tell what actual viewers thought.  Removing the almost obligatory '1' ratings that detractors of the film give even if they haven't seen it, 1600 voters on the IMDB website gave it a 8.5 rating on a scale from 1 to 10.
