In October 2007 the National Enquirer accused Edward's of having an extramarital affair with Rielle Hunter - a claim that Edward's repeatedly denied.  Armed with knowledge that Edwards planned to visit Rielle at her hotel on July 22nd 2008, the Enquirer was waiting and confronted Edwards at 2 A.M. when he left her room after being there for a considerable time.  Edwards ran and hid and security was called to escort him out.  Edward's was being considered as a Vice Presidential candidate.

[[Conservative]] media and radio's prominent position forced the issue into the public eye and further raised serious questions about Edwards. Edwards chose to give a television interview to ABC News less than two weeks later admitting he had an affair, but claiming some elements of the story, including that he had fathered her child, were false.<ref>[http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/story?id=5441195&page=1 Edwards Admits Sexual Affair; Lied as Presidential Candidate] ABC News, August 8, 2008</ref>  The major news organizations then all "broke" the story and claimed that the mainstream media could not do so earlier because they had no proof - a position that did not match past choices to air stories.

The general feeling is that this scandal has put a serious career ending dent into Edwards' political prospects.  Considering all that has happened and Elizabeth with cancer, snake oil salesman? It has removed him from Vice President consideration and hampered the chances for Presidential convention speeches and of his becoming Attorney General.
