They followed unilateral extensions of Icelandic fishing grounds by the Icelandic government which were not recognised by British trawlers. Icelandic gunboats would attempt to cut the lines of, or even arrest, British vessels; while British Royal navy frigates were sent to the area to protect the fishing fleet from interference.
