==History and Politics==
Dominica was colonised by [[France]], having overcome fierce resistance from the indigenous Carib people (3000 Caribs, the last pre-columbian people to survive in the Caribbean, live on Dominica). In 1763 it was ceded to the [[United Kingdom]], which ruled the island until 1978. A corrupt post-independence administratuion was replaced in 1980 by a government led by the [[Conservative]] Mary Eugenia Charles. Under her 15 year rule, the island and its opeople prospered.
