He sought the Democratic Party nomination for President in 1972 and 1976 but did poorly in the primaries.  "Scoop" Jackson was known as a [[Conservative Democrat]] who from 1972 on was out of step with the party's [[liberal]] activists but remained a popular U.S. Senator from his home state of [[Washington]] until his death in 1983.
