The first translation of the Bible into English was made under the supervision of the English cleric John Wyclif in the 1380's, with the assistance of John Purvey. It was a scholarly translation, based on the [[Latin]], [[Greek]], and [[Hebrew]] texts, but was found to be unweildy due to its adherence to Latin grammar (in which, for instance, verbs tend to be at the end of sentences). A second Wycliffite translation was prepared late in this period, which avoided this problem, but due to the fact that it could only be distributed in manuscript form, it was not very widely disseminated; over the next century, its form of English gradually became antiquated.
