Bass guitars are typically designed like electric guitars. However the difference being that usually they only have 4 strings, thicker than a normal guitar string to provide a lower sound.
Can be played with either fingers (often used in older playing styles, but still common today), but can also be played with a plastic pick/plectrum, which is becoming more common.
