Names are assigned to [[Hurricane names|hurricanes]], typhoons and cyclones in order to differentiate between each years' storms. However, there is no universal naming convention, with hurricanes and Atlantic tropical storms being assigned male and female names, whilst the naming of a typhoon may differ from just being assigned a number (as in [[Japan]]), to being allocated an Asian name, as done by [[China]] and the [[Philippines]].
