An abortion is a medical procedure to terminate a fetus thereby ending a pregnancy.
An elective procedure is one done by choice rather than by a medical need.
An elective abortion therefore is a termination of a pregnancy by the choice of the pregnant woman. This may be a result of medical advice due to potential or diagnosed birth defects or a choice that the baby would be unwanted or could not be supported.
Birth control pills or the "morning after" pill are not methods of abortion, they prevent pregnancy rather than terminate it.
The drug RU-486 known as Mifegyne in Europe and Mifeprex in the United States is an abortion drug.
