'''Lee Trevino''' is a [[Mexican]] [[golf]]er of the [[20th century]]. He became a professional golfer in 1960, and is a contemporary of [[Arnold Palmer]]. He was an [[icon]] of Mexicans in America in the 1960s, similar to [[Cesar Chavez]], so much so that he titled his [[autobiography]] ''They Call Me Super Mex'', a reference to [[Sydney Poitier]]'s character in ''[[The Heat of the Night]]''. (Poitier was an icon of black Americans in the same time period.) Trevino's other nicknames included "The Merry Mex" and "Mad Mex".
In 1971, Trevino won the 1971 [[U.S. Open]] against [[Jack Nicklaus]]. Amusingly, in 1975 Trevino was struck by [[lightning]] on the 15th green of the [[Western Open]],[http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9D0CE1D8173FF937A25755C0A967958260&sec=&spon=&pagewanted=2] which led to his being surpassed by Jack Nicklaus. It took several years for the Mexican Trevino to regain his full form.
