The tanned and handsome Nicklaus (born in 1940) continued to play until 2005, when he retired from the Masters/Open circuit. Nicklaus is the lowest-shooting amateur to have played the [[U.S. Open]] (1960; he shot 282 that year, finishing second to Arnold Palmer).
