'''Cesar Chavez''' (1927-1993) was a [[Roman Catholic]] [[labor]] organizer who started one of the first farm workers unions and organized [[boycott]]s of farmers who opposed unionization. His work is said to have led to many improvements in the working conditions experienced by farmhands. His importance in American history is seen in the fact that his birthday is a holiday in four states and that the [[United States Postal Service]] has released a stamp in his honor.

Cesar was exposed firsthand to the bad working conditions of migrant laborers, which is believed to have shaped the direction his life took. As a child, he began to develop a nonviolent world view, which he practiced his entire life.
He After graduating from 8th grade in 1942, he began working as migrant farm worker. Two years later, at the age of 17, Chavez enlisted in the United States Navy to escape from the farms though military service was not something he enjoyedand served until 1946.<ref>''The Story of Cesar Chavez'' (UFW Biography) http://lasculturas.com/biographies/214-civil-rights/112-cesar-chavez</ref>
