'''Ethelfleda''' (also Æthelflaed) (d. 918) “Lady of the Mercians”, was the daughter of [[Alfred the Great]] who became the last independent ruler of [[Mercia]]. She was married to Ethelred of Mercia in the late 880’s, and there is evidence that even before her husband’s death in 911, she had a degree of royal power.
She is known to have had built a series of fortified settlements (''burghs'') against the [[Welsh]] in the west and the Hiberno-[[Vikings]] and [[Dane]]s in the north and east. She campaigned against the Danes with her brother, [[Edward the Elder]] She was succeeded by her daughter, Elfwynn, who was immediately deposed by Edward, Mercia becoming province of [[Wessex]].
