After the death of King Solomon, the 12 tribes divided into two camps, the south was known as (Judah). The tribes of Judah and Benjamin made the southern kingdom with Jerusalem as their capital. The 10 other tribes made up the northern kingdom (Samaria). In eight b.c., the northern kingdom of Israel was conquered and taken away by the Assyrians,  also known as the Lost 10 tribes of Israel. The Southern kingdom was conquered by Babylonians, Greeks and by Romans.
