the hypothesis that some unknown gene is lost and leads to shorter life, is at least possible hypothesis, though it is untested and they gave no good reason to belive it.
I think the telomere degredation in itself is a dead end, as studies with rats overexpressing telomerase (adds base pairs to keep telomers from degrading)just led to cancer. (you would need your telomers not to degrade, but many other things as well?)
