After withdrawing, McCain announced that he supported the removal of the Confederate battle flag from the top of the South Carolina statehouse.  During the primary he had stated he believed it was an issue for the state to decide, which was his true belief from a federal standpoint, but not his personal belief.  He felt by withholding her personal belief that he had erred.  He explained that he lived his life by being open and felt he should have been at that time and apologized for not speaking up sooner. <ref>http://archives.cnn.com/2000/ALLPOLITICS/stories/04/19/mccain.sc/</ref>
