Maine, a traditional province in western [[France]], was a medieval county lying between [[Normandy]] and [[Anjou]]. After a century of strife between the two, it was annexed by Anjou in 1126, and came into [[English]] hands with the accession of Henry of Anjou to the throne of England as [[Henry II]] in 1154.
It was one of the provinces lost to France by [[King John]] in 1204 – the fact formally recognised by [[Henry III]] in1259. It was retaken in by the English 1425 and held until 1448 when it was ceded to the French crown by [[Henry VI]] at the insistence of his French wife, [[Margaret of Anjou]], an act that caused much resentment amongst the English nobility, becoming a contributing factor in the [[Wars of the Roses]].
