Bedford-Stuyvesant (pronounced STY-vess-ent, often known as just Bed-Stuy) is a well-known neighborhood in the borough of Brooklyn in New York City, New York. For decades, it has been a center for African-American culture in New York City, experiencing a recent cultural revolution similar to the Harlem Renaissance in the neighborhood of Harlem in the borough of Manhattan. It is also notable for being the birthplace of many notable Americans, mostly hip-hop artists.
Bedford-Stuyvesant in Popular Culture
Part of the Tom Wolfe novel Bonfire of the Vanities was set in Bedford-Stuyvesant. The entire Spike Lee movie Do The Right Thing took place along a single block in Bedford-Stuyvesant and is somewhat autobiographical (considering that Spike Lee grew up in the neighborhood).
