The '''Open System Interconnection (OSI) Model''' (or the OSI Reference Model) is a basic representation of how information moves from a software application through a network medium to an application on another computer <ref>http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/internetworking/technology/handbook/Intro-to-Internet.html#wp1020627</ref>.
Not encompassing newer protocol developments, the model is still considered to be a very useful introduction to network architecture.
There are seven layers in the model with information flowing from the highest layer (seven) to the lowest (one). The layers are:
*Layer 7 - Application
*Layer 6 - Presentation
*Layer 5 - Session
*Layer 4 - Transport
*Layer 3 - Network
*Layer 2 - Data Link
*Layer 1 - Physical
