5. I believe Teddy Roosevelt was a good president. Even though he was a Republican, he was not really conservative.  He was not really liberal either.  He had strong opinions and acted on them.  For example, many liberals believe we should not get involved with other countries and their political problems, but he thought we should get involved whenever there was any wrong doing taking place. Another example is that environmental concerns are generally on the liberal agenda, but Roosevelt was a conservationist. He started the national park system.

6.  Amendment 17 was ratified in 1913. It gave the right to elect senators to the people of each state. This replaced Article I, Section 3, Clause 1 of the Constitution, which gave the power to state legislatures to elect senators. This Amendment was proposed to promote democracy and to cut down on corruption.  I think it definitely promotes democracy, but I don’t think it necessarily cuts down on corruption.
