'''Ireland''' (Irish: ''Éire'') is an island country west of [[England]]. In 1920, it was divided into two states:
* [[Republic of Ireland]] (or simply '''Ireland''') is the official name in the English language , under the Irish Constitution of 1937, of the independent state occupying 83% of Ireland's landmass. The state's descriptive name since the Republic of Ireland Act 1948 is the '''[[Republic of Ireland]]''' (Irish: Poblacht na hÉireann). It consists of 26 of Ireland's 32 counties in the island's four provinces of Leinster, Munster, Connacht and Ulster. However, only 3 of the 9 counties in [[Ulster]] are under the control of the Republic of Ireland. According to the last census the Republic of Ireland has a population of 4,234,925<ref>[http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/environment/copy_of_census/]</ref>
