THE END
Line 170: Line 170:
More controversial was President Bush's decision to invade Iraq in 2003, after its dictator Saddam Hussein refused to disarm and refused to cooperate with inspections of its nuclear program.  Some feared he was developing "weapons of mass destruction," though no hard evidence of that has ever been found.  More plausible is that Saddam Hussein was harboring or funding terrorists, and there is no doubt that was brutal to Iraqis themselves.  Americans captured Baghdad, Iraq's capital, remarkably quickly, but actually the enemy had gone "underground" and engaged in terrorist attacks against our troops for the next several years, possibly aided by Iran.  In 2007, President Bush approved "the surge" to stop the terrorist attacks, and it was remarkably successful.  American troops remain in Iraq to this day, though Barack Obama (elected in November 2008) promised early in his campaign to pull them out.

President Bush was unsuccessful in passing an attempt at immigration "reform" that would have granted amnesty to millions of illegal aliens in the nation, and given them a path to American citizenship.  President Bush did support and sign into law the "No Child Left Behind Act of 2001," which allows students of public schools that repeatedly do poorly on mandatory tests to transfer to another public school that has a better record on these tests.  Ted Kennedy's staff wrote most of the bill, and before long both conservatives and liberals were criticizing many of its burdensome regulations on the school system.  The Act does seem to have improved accountability of public schools slightly, but does not generate new alternatives.  Political activism by homeschoolers resulted in adding a provision to protect us against being subjected to the mandatory public school tests; any state that attempts to do that (and there was legislation in New Jersey to require that) will automatically lose millions of dollars in federal funding.  Homeschooling had become mainstream by by 2008.

By the end of 2008 the economy was in a severe downturn, with unemployment increasingly rapidly, and this contributed to victories by the Democratic Party in Congress and the presidency.  43 out of 50 states had a budget deficit (more expenses than revenue), and since nearly all states have laws requiring them to balance their budget, they need to cut back the programs and lay off government workers.  The federal government itself faces a large deficit and congressmen are considering a "stimulus package" to spark economic improvement, as President FDR did (unsuccessfully) with the New Deal.

== The Supreme Court ==
 +
 +
From about 1960 to the end of 2008, the Supreme Court had grown increasingly conservative.  The 7-2 vote in favor of legalized abortion in ''Roe v. Wade'' in 1972 had narrowed to an expected 5-4 level of support by the end of 2008, or perhaps the court is now split 4-4 with one undecided on the issue.  This court did rule 5-4 ''against'' a right to partial-birth abortion, which is a most heinous form of abortion.
 +
 +
President George W. Bush appointed two strong conservatives to the Supreme Court during his presidency:  Chief Justice John Roberts and Samuel Alito, who is from New Jersey.  The liberal Justices tend to be older, while the more conservative Justices are younger.
 +
 +
State supreme courts have been deciding the issue of same-sex marriage.  In 2003, a 4-3 vote of its highest court mandated same-sex marriage licenses.  In 2008, a 4-3 vote of the California Supreme Court all mandated marriage licenses for homosexual couples, but in November the voters overturned that decision by adding a provision to the California Constitution specifying that marriage shall be between only a man and woman.  Nearly all the other states have banned same-sex marriage.

== The Future ==
 +
 +
The future is ordinarily not part of a history course, but perhaps it should be.  History reveals trends that continue into the future.  Some of the current trends include:
 +
 +
*loss in manufacturing and factory jobs to foreign competitors
 +
*exodus from public and private schools toward charter schools and homeschooling
 +
*increasingly conservative nation (in the view of the teacher)
 +
*increase in Islam worldwide, and in the United States
 +
*rise in the influence of the internet
 +
 +
Why is it important to use history to try to predict the future?  We all have to plan our own future, God willing, and do not want to train to be an automaker if there are not going to be any jobs for that trade.  Also, we do not want to be misled into thinking that the other side will own the future, and giving up.
 +
 +
It is also worth pausing to remember all those in history who sacrifice their lives for our sake.  Some examples include:
 +
 +
*the soldiers who fought in the wars
 +
*Alexander Hamilton, who was killed by Aaron Burr for stopping him politically
 +
*Abraham Lincoln, assassinated by a southern sympathizer
 +
*others?
 +
 +
And then there were those who gave everything they had for the benefit of the future.  Some examples include:
 +
 +
*Thomas Edison
 +
*George Patton
 +
*Ronald Reagan
 +
*others?
 +
 +
On that note, Lord willing the next 400 years of America will be as blessed as the last 400 years.
 +
 +
THE END.
