The Most Valuable Player (MVP) distinction is one that exists across most professional sports and is generally given at the end of the season to the best-achieving player in the league. In the [[National Basketball Association]], [[Major League Baseball]], and [[National Football League]], the award retains the name, MVP. However, in the [[National Hockey League]], the Most Valuable Player award is called the Hart Memorial Trophy.<ref>http://www.nhl.com/trophies/hart.html</ref>
Typically, most professional leagues have two separate MVP awards each year: One for the regular season, and one for the playoffs.
The minor controversy that usually arises from the award, is in regards to its ambiguous definition.<ref>http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=hill/080404&sportCat=nba</ref> Some argue it should go to the player who has performed the best, while others contend that the success of one's team should play a critical role in determining whether a player is truly the "most valuable".
