: The UFC is definitely professional status, however I would agree that Anderson Silva probably doesn't belong in this list. Also, is this list only for American sports idols (Silva isn't American) or just sports idols in general? --[[User:JimP|JimP]] 18:22, 18 December 2008 (EST)

::I would say sports in general. I believe it was MMAWeekly that called him the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. I could probably switch him with [[Randy Couture]], if you wish. [[User:JY23|JY23]] 18:28, 18 December 2008 (EST)

:::Oh, he's definitely one of the best fighters, and surely a contender for best p4p (with GSP, Fedor and BJ among others) I guess I was questioning the inclusion of an MMA fighter in the list. To paraphrase jpatt, they're uncommon if you don't follow the sport. Whereas most people would probably have heard of Michael Jordan even if they don't follow basketball.
