The boys started there training at seven and served in the army most of there life. It was considered an honor to die in battle. The Spartan women and girls were treated almost as severley as the men and boys. When a Spartan soldier went into battle his mother would hand him his sheild and say "With it or on it." She meant to come home victorious with it onhis arm or come home laying on it, dead.It was also a discrace to lose a battle and come home still alive.
