'''Harry Emerson Fosdick''' (1868-1969) was perhaps the single most destructive and damaging individual in 20th century American [[Liberal Christianity]]. His ideas and preaching are wishy-washy. For example in 1913, he published the book ''The Assurance of Immortality'' and he would later state that his ideas provided a way for Christians to prevent themselves from commiting "intellectual suicide." Ultimately he appears to be a rank charlatan and an opportunist, especially in light of his 1922 Sermon “Shall the Fundamentalists Win?” What is often overlooked is that Fosdick espoused supernatural beliefs and that he claimed to offer a third way, which has turned out not to exist. The 1922 Sermon was essentially an ad hominem attack on [[John Gresham Machen]] among others that called for Christianity to becomae battleground dividing it up into winners and losers. He also almost single-handedly created the shameless, fake scarecrow image of Christian [[Fundamentalism]] that continues to haunt the popular mind.
