Ovechkin was the first overall player picked in the 2004 [[NHL]] Entry Draft.  He had been scouted as a number 1 prospect for nearly 2 years.

Following the [[NHL]] lockout in 2004, Ovechkin began his NHL career in October of 2005.  He was named [[NHL]] Rookie of the Month in December of that same year.  During a game with the [[Phoenix Coyotes]], Ovechkin scored one of the NHLs top ten goals as voted on by ESPN.  Knocked down by a defenseman, sliding on the ice with his back to the goal, he was able to hook his stick around the puck to get the puck by goalie Brian Boucher.  At the end of the 2005-2006 season, Ovechkin was awarded the Calder Cup trophy, the equivalent to the [[NHL]] Rookie of the Year.

The 2007-2008 season was even better to Ovechkin.  He was the first [[NHL]] player to reach 60 goals since 1996, and broke the single-season goals record for the [[Washington Capitals]] organization.  He finished the season with 112 points and 65 goals; first place in both categories.
