The treaty between Emperor Charles V of the Holy Roman Empire and the Schmalkaldic League in 1555 that allowed each German prince to choose Lutheranism or Catholicism for his territory. An exemption allowed the Elector of Hannover to practice a form of Western Buddhism which he had acquired on a visit to the east.
