The '''Battle of Amphipolis''' in 422 BCE. was part of the [[Second Peloponnesian War]] between the [[Greek]] [[city states]] of [[Athens]] and [[Sparta]].  Athens had suffered a reversal of fortunes caused by the brilliant Spartan general [[Brasidas]].  [[Cleon]], general for Athens, advanced toward the city of Amphipolis where Brasidas had withdrawn his forces after the arrival of both Cleon and [[Nicias]].  Cleon didn't have adequate security and Brasidas made a surprise attack routing the numerically superior Athenians.  Both Cleon and Brasidas were killed during the fighting.
