In 2006 Caldwell's contract with the Chargers ran out and he became a free agent. In the first day of the NFL free agency, March 2, 2006, he signed with the [[New England Patriots]] to a three year deal. Because the Patriots wide receiver core was depleted from loses in free agency and a trade ([[Deion Branch]] being traded to Settle for a first round pick after a contract dispute) Caldwell quickly inherited the role of number one wide receiver in the Patriots offense. He carried the burden far better then expected. His first season as a Patriots was a breakout one. Not only did he set career records in all of his offense categories - but he also managed to stay relatively injury free playing in 15 games while starting 14 of them. He finished the regular season with 61 receptions for 760 yards and 4 touchdowns. He also had two games over 100 yards receiving.

In the AFC division game vs. his former team, the [[San Diego Chargers]], Reche caught a pass for 49 yards for a first down on a third down and long play in the forth quarter with under two minutes left in the game. The Patriots would end up winning the game on a field goal from the field position gained on the reception. The next week in the AFC Championship game vs. the [[Indianapolis Colts]] Caldwell, dropped two potential touchdown passes. The second drop forced that Patriots to kick a field goal and they ended up losing by four points that a touchdown would have given them.
