When I took my citizenship oath to become a US citizen in the early 80's it was a time when we were required to swear on the Bible our oath of allegience. It was for me a strange thing to not do so on the Torah because I am not Christian and do not observe the Christian Bible therefore. The Supreme Court Judge Arthur Goldberg was also Jewish and I was taught he swore on the Hebrew Bible. However I find the subject to swearing oaths to be very interesting and have done some researching to find out if it is true that Teddy Roosevelt was the only president who not swear an oath on the Bible. It appears he may not have been the only one. If you would like I can find proper citations to the following: President Johnson was sworn in on Air Force without a Bible because it had to be done very quickly following the terrible assassination of President Kennedy; Franklin Pierce did not use a Bible; John Quincy Adams placed his hand on the book of laws. This is a very interesting topic and not one to be overly contentious about. In my reading I am finding that for a time in American history it was not favored to use a Bible at all.
