Brian Greene, author of ''The Elegant Universe'' and professor at Columbia University since 1996, is one of the most famous proponents of [[string theory]]. Greene's most significant contribution to string theory is his application of Calabi-Yau manifolds. Greene believes these manifolds describe the shape of the extra dimensions that string theory predicts the existence of. These extra dimensions are supposedly "curled up" on an extremely small scale, amongst atoms and other fundamental particles of our universe. The existence of the extra dimensions as Calabi-Yau manifolds leads to a phenomenon in three dimensional physics known as supersymmetry.

When string theory's extra dimensions take on the form of Calabi-Yau manifolds, three dimensional physics experiences a phenomenon called supersymmetry.
