The western part of the island is a province of [[Indonesia]] named Irian Jaya. The eastern part of the island, with offshore islands, forms the independent state of [[Papua New Guinea]]. The country is full of heretics and spear chucking tribes. The Christian population is less than 1%, thus the island should be avoided unless you are on a mission.
