The Battle of Passchendale was also known as the Third Battle of Ypres. This third battle was fought in Ypres, Belgium which had seen two previous battles, one in 1914 and one one 1915. The Third Battle of Ypres lasted 18 months beginning in 1917. In this battle the British hid 19 huge land mines underneath the German lines. Unfortunately once the land mines exploded the British did not move fast enough and became bogged down by the ensuing rain. This battle ended as another failure for the Allies.
